DAILY PROMPT: BARTER
If the world worked on a barter system, how would you fare? Would you have services to barter? Would you be successful, or would you struggle?
Now this is something I know a little bit about, and really it is a very good idea to seriously contemplate living in a world that may need to adjust to barter as being a larger part of life! Mate and I have been living sustainably from the land for almost forty years, and each year might yield an abundance of a different kind of product, say for example an extra amount of firewood to sell/barter (bad storm, knocked down lots of trees); or, an especially wet year might produce an abundance of wild herbs such as Echinacea, rosehips, catnip, etc. that not only would be dried for teas, but also mixed in salves or made into tinctures for medicinal usage; we have had years with an abundance of goat kids, or colts, or chickens or eggs. Living rurally with others living similarly we may have each had abundances of different sorts, and it has always been a rarity to have much cash amongst us, so we bartered – it works. So an abundance of chickens in the freezer were bartered for an abundance of something else that we needed, i.e. sawn lumber, or pork, and so on. But I must say that the times of barter that we enjoyed the most was when we bartered chickens for dental work and lawyer fees! Yes, really. As I mentioned, cash was hard to come by, even though the abundance was also sold, sometimes there was just more stuff than money! The lifestyle is what made it all so good, bartering goes with the lifestyle.
Do we think that barter could work? Absolutely! Lifestyles will have to adopt a more old time charm of folks doing what they are good at doing, and bartering for what they need from others. Rural folks already do this, but the cities are another story, and there will have to be some major adjustments there, but whatever your skills may be, therein lies the barter power; wherever you find your passion you will have something to trade, someplace. It can work, it will just take effort, belief and some good attitude to work out the kinks. I would bet the world might just be a much happier place!
