Twitter Pated – Ode to Spring

Spring – Romance is in the Air

The first day of spring was just a few days ago, at least in the northern hemisphere – and although we are not far from the equator we are still considered ‘northern’ here.  The seasons are definitely a bit screwy here, as in actuality we are entering fall, as it precedes winter and is after summer, right?  But the evidence of this yearly event called ‘spring’ is clearly all around me as I watch the world in nature exemplify itself in its rapture of love.

The most obvious one for us is our two female cats, now exactly one year old (sisters), are in full blown heat.  Yikes!  I saw that someone had used the term ‘insufferable’ referring to the behavior of felines at this time, and I totally agree!  We have always had cats, but they were always barn cats and when this season would grab them they would disappear for a few days and come back knocked up (neighbor barn cats).  We are fortunate now that there are absolutely no cats within a very great distance, but not so lucky for the kitties that are beside themselves in mind altered senseless estrus.  Rolling around on the ground, yowling, prowling out and about, and displaying themselves for the dogs – the dogs?  Wow, they seriously want some.  The dogs that normally chase them, especially Otis, and now they are kissing them and asking them to service them?  Yes, their little brains are tweaked and hormones have completely taken over.  (How long does this last?!).  It kind of reminds me of that ‘joke’ about the eighty something year lady in court for murder, the local teens had decided to play a joke on her (April Fool’s) and one of them had sat down next to her and whispered in her ear some endearing sexy comments, while running his hand along the inside of her thigh…until she screamed ‘take me young man, take me!’  He ran off yelling April Fool and she shot him.  Raging hormones out of control?  Cats begging dogs?  Hmmmm…

Well, one thing for sure is that this is bringing my female dog into season, as well, which is a good thing as I have a waiting list for puppies, and now that she is mature she can handle it, so we will allow her to indulge her amorous inclinations this year (with Otis, lucky boy).  Yes, spring has sprung.

This morning as I was sipping my coffee and watching the jungle come to life, in the dead tree down below, which is a favorite resting spot for the birds of all kinds, there was a bird perched…and then another one a little bit higher, and then another one came in on another branch, and the bird below looked as though he was stretching his wings…I picked up the binoculars and he was fanning his tail in all of the glory that he could summon – he was courting the two female birds above him!

Well my attention is on now, it seems that it ‘tis the season for love, and all around me are the expressions of romance (very much like in Disney’s ‘Bambi’, when everything is twitter pated and the owl yells for them all to ‘stop with all of the singing’ – LOL).  Even Mate and I are a little twitter pated, the first day of spring is also our anniversary and this year it is thirty-five years married.  Not impossible, and still in love.

For many years on the ranch spring brought us crops of foals, kids (goats), lambs, calves, and of course lots of garden seedlings, a total expression of new beginnings.  Now we are down to two very horny cats (that will NOT be mothers) and a couple of dogs, and of course there is no way that I would or could go there again – ha!  Been there done that.  However it is a joy to observe the jungle spring passage in all of her critters, even the howlers have been acting strangely at odd hours throughout the day and night, and making some strangely different kinds of noises…I wonder…

It is all a Wonder and a Marvel and Miraculous and Beautiful.  We have entered into Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, a true beginning of a new year.  This year is special, different, exciting and unknown – each in many ways.  A blessing to all this season, for the fire of new life has been lit and we are now ready to launch.  May I suggest getting ‘twitter pated’ and enjoying this awesome time of the year!  Let the fire of Aries rage through you and launch you into wherever you are dreaming of going.

  1. Elena,
Your stories are so detailed, I can almost see what you see. BTW…female cats persist in their season and it will let up a little, but they don’t stop until they get what they want!!!! Happy anniversary to you two. Miracles in progress. Much love
